A potential application of  infrared SLED (superlattice light emitting diode) arrays is for a technology called thermal scene generation, important for test and evaluation of thermal cameras. In contrast to the focal plane arrays used in cameras, which record scenes, SLED arrays generate thermal scenes, like a television or computer monitor, except operating at infrared wavelengths. The grand challenge is to fabricate SLED arrays that have sufficiently high efficiency, irradiance, and bandwidth, and to create large arrays with high yield/operability.
